pastor doug-croppedThe Rev. Dr. Douglas (Doug) Nagel has served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Gloucester since 2003. Doug was born in New Castle, PA, in 1954, and is a family man who values education. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from Lafayette College in Easton, PA (1976), a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, NJ (1979), and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, PA (1998).


Pastor Doug is married to LuAnn (Tremblay) Nagel. LuAnn is the owner and manager of Angelwing Stationers in Gloucester, a stationery and gift store. Doug and LuAnn have two adult children. Elizabeth is married to Derek Aldridge. They have twin daughters, Cadence and Caylyn, and they have a son Andrew who is married to Alyssa; they live in Virginia Beach.


Doug enters his 34th year of ordained ministry this year and has served churches in Cumberland, MD; Herrin, IL; and Fremont, OH. When not working, Doug enjoys singing and making music with the piano, keyboard, organ, and guitar. He and also likes cycling, reading, collecting stamps, and playing croquet with the members of the Middle Peninsula Croquet Club.


Doug describes himself as "a pastor who listens well, cares deeply, thinks creatively, communicates effectively, and laughs frequently."


Director of Music and Organist

Mary Beth

DR. MARY BETH BENNETT is the new Director of Music Ministries at First Presbyterian Church in Gloucester. A recognized performer, improviser, conductor, and composer, she serves on the adjunct music faculty of the University of Richmond. The winner of numerous awards in performance and composition, she has served as a judge for the International Year of the Organ Competition and the National Competition in Organ Improvisation of the American Guild of Organists. Having held positions in Washington, D.C., at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and as Ceremonial Organist for the U.S. Government, she earned her degrees from the Eastman School of Music, the University of Southern California, Stetson University, and the Staatliche Hochschüle für Musik (Cologne Germany). As a conductor, she has led a number of distinguished choirs including the professional choir of the Basilica of the National Shrine and the 120-voice West Los Angeles Chorale, and has served as accompanist for the American Repertory Singers, James River Singers, the Georgetown Chorale, and others. Dr. Bennett’s recordings have garnered critical acclaim, and her performances and compositions have been broadcast multiple times on American Public Media’s “Pipedreams” with Host, Michael Barone. Her compositions are published by Augsburg, Concordia, National, World Library, G.I.A., Hope, and Oxford University Press publishing companies. Mary Beth lives in Richmond with her husband, Mark Bowersox, and her exceptional dog, Roxy. She looks forward to building on the great foundation of sacred music already at First Presbyterian, and to exploring the charming Gloucester area.


Director of Christian Education

DCE 2Cindy Lanning is Director of Christian Education.  In this role, Lanning oversees the church’s educational programs for all ages.  Of particular focus is offering outstanding Sunday School classes/Bible studies for every age, from babies through seniors.  

Lanning brings a wealth of educational experience, most recently as a fifth-grade teacher at Botetourt Elementary, and she holds a license to teach pre-kindergarten through sixth grade in the Commonwealth.   She has served Gloucester County Public Schools in many ways, including on the Teacher Advisory Council for the Superintendent, Principal Interview Panel, and Virginia Tiered Support System Committee. 

Lanning holds a bachelor’s degree in management and marketing from Christopher Newport University.  She is married to Steve Lanning, owner of CSL Enterprises in Gloucester, and they are the parents of two adult children, Corinne and Ben, and a high school senior, Sam.  



Administrative Assistant


Becky Lazos is a mother to two children. She started working for our church in 2015. She is the editor of our monthly newsletter, weekly e-newsletter, weekly church bulletin, and website. She is the go-to person that will probably be able to answer any question about our church and membership.








Jennifer Lewis is our new custodian. She started working for the church in January. If you see her working around church, make her feel welcome. She is doing a wonderful job!



 Infant/Toddler Teachers

Anna Robins began working at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church in 2017. She has had a lot of experience working with children and her geniuine love for our infants and toddlers in an inpiration to all. Her enthusiasm and care for the children is a great blessing.Karen and Anna



Karen MurphyKaren Murphy has been a Nursery Care Provider for Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church since 2008. She cares for children from infancy through age 4. Karen also provides care for older children with special needs in order for their family members to attend church services and Sunday school. During Children’s Sunday School, she assists children with special needs as they enjoy class with their peers.

Karen was employed by Middlesex County Public Schools for 13 years as a special education teacher’s aide where she worked with children from kindergarten through fifth grade. She then secured a position with Williamsburg/James City County Public School System in the Autism program. In addition to extensive on-the-job training, Karen has taken numerous classes in special education. She is working towards obtaining certification in the Autism Spectrum Disorder program. Karen has two adult sons, a daughter-in-law, one “granddog,” and three “grandcats.”
